dog catcher:
(plural: ‘dog catchers‘)
an officer from the municipality or corporation of a town, city, etc. whose job is to catch owner-less wandering or stray or street dogs, cats and other animals, and take them off the streets to a place called a ‘pound’ where those animals are looked after;
an animal control officer,
To satisfy her passion for animals, Jane became a dog catcher in her county so that she can always be with stray animals that need food and protection.
In the past, dog catchers were those workers whose sole purpose was to trap stray animals and send them to pounds where they were killed, but these days dog catchers are officers who not only catch stray animals but also investigate animal cruelty cases in which owners of pet animals ill-treat or abuse animals in their possession.
Though dog catching seems a very down-to-earth job, the excitement and risk in the job of a dog catcher are so great that they sometimes put off cowards who dare not get near a menace-looking dog or cat!
