dressmaker:
(plural: ‘dressmakers‘; pronunciation: ‘dress…maker’)
a person, usually a woman, who makes clothes, especially dresses, for women;
a needlwoman, a seamstress,

a dressmaker at work
Mr Charles Beckton had a large family with a lot of women folk, and the family had used the same clothier and the same dressmaker for twenty-five years before they moved from their native town to the city.
In the past, a dressmaker learned the art of making clothes by being an apprentice at a senior dressmaker for several years, unlike the present day dressmaker, fashion designer and tailor who goes to dress making institutions or takes courses or special classes in dress making for both men and women.
The dressmaker of the past is the fashion designer of the present.
The difference between a tailor and dressmaker is that a tailor sews clothes for men and a dressmaker sews clothes for women; however, these days there are tailors who make clothes for women and dressmakers who sew clothes for men!
