(old gendarmes)
a member of the armed police force in France or in countries that are under French control or influence;
a French policeman;
(a slang word in places other than France and French influenced countries) a policeman,

a modern day gendarme
Most countries in the Middle East and Europe despise U. S. A’s. gendarme role over the free world, wondering who the Americans are to dictate terms to free people.
There are so many slang words for the police and the policemen that, it seems, there is no other profession/department that is called by these many names.
Like the police forces in other countries during the World War II, French gendarmerie (French police force) has also come under criticism over war crimes, and one by one, several gendarmes have been prosecuted by the International Court for their role in the deaths of thousands of innocent people.
