The word ‘litterateur’ actually means a ‘man of letters’, i.e. a man who can write very well.
Not all writers are called ‘litterateurs’, but only those who write greatly on topics that are special.
Most litterateurs are recognised posthumously and their literary works are appreciated by the next generation because of politics and jealous contemporaries who were less literary but more influenced in the upper circles.
It is thrilling to read about the lives of some litterateurs who were too poor even to buy a book or a pen at times, but survived and wrote great books.
