Arnold’s grandfather, they say, was a lutanist, and gave several solo concerts besides playing with other great musicians of his times.
A guitarist is a player of a guitar, a pianist is a player of the piano, a flutist is a player of a flute and a lutist/luntenist/lutanist is a player of a lute, but a player of a trumpet is a trumpeter, not a trumpist; however, a player of a ‘trump’, a kind of wind instrument like a flute, is called a ‘trumpist’!
There are some music composers and guitarist who mix lute notes in their guitar notes and some modern day lutanists combine guitar notes in their lute playing.
