May Queen:
(also ‘queen of the May’; plural: ‘May Queens‘/’queens of the May’)
(in mythology) the goddess of spring, also called The Maiden, the flower bride, queen of the fairies or the lady of the flowers, who symbolises the nature and represents purity of the nature;
a beautiful young school girl who is selected as the ‘queen’ of the May Day celebrations, usually, wearing a white dress and a crown of flowers on her head to symbolise purity and festivity, riding a horse or walking at the front of a parade (march of people) for May Day celebrations,
My cousin is very excited because she is going to be the May Queen of this year from our school.
It’s not only the May Queens that are proud to be in the limelight during May Day celebrations but also the dress and crown makers of May Queens whose creative work makes the May Queens more adorable.
In the present day custom, May Queens are young teenage girls but are looked after by Child attendants, also called ‘May Princesses’.
