mayor:
(plural: ‘mayors‘; female: (old-fashioned usage) ‘mayoress‘)
a man or a woman who is the head of the government of a city, town, borough, municipal corporation, etc., usually directly elected by the people or by a town council,
The mayor promised sufficient funds for the development of the junior and senior high schools of our city.
Though the word ‘mayoress’ has been used to refer to a female mayor, of lately, the female mayors are often addressed as ‘Mayor’ and ‘Mr Mayor’ or ‘Madam Mayor’.
Mayors are susceptible to flattery and bribes as they are the heads of the executive boards or commissions or councils that run the town or city, including appointments and business licensing, budget allocations, etc., where there is an ample scope for corruption; therefore, very few mayors are given a clean slate at the time of their retirement.
