mugwump:
(plural: ‘mugwumps‘; pronunciation: the letters ‘mug’ rhyme with the word “mug”, and the letters ‘wump’ rhyme with the word “pump”)
(usually in plural and with a capital ‘M’ —Mugwumps) originally from those members of the Republican Party who left the party and joined the Democratic Party in the U S Presidential elections in 1884;

The young politician is called a mugwump for his independent ideas and for his nerve to make public the flaws of his own party.
Several mugwumps who opposed their own party’s policies joined the other parties just before the elections, and so the ruling party lost the elections miserably!
Some political science experts are in the opinion that the present day politics would be better if some old Mugwumps were to come back to life.
