pandit:
(also with the spelling ‘pundit‘; plural: ‘pandits‘)
a learned person from the Brahman caste in India;
used as a title of respect for any person who knows a lot in some specific field in particular or of things in general, e.g. political pandits, economic pandits, etc.
e.g.
Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of India, was called a ‘pandit’ because of his wealth of knowledge not only in politics but also in several other aspects of life.
The economic pandits are hoping that the present economic recession will be over soon. (i.e. experts in economics)
{Note: The spelling of this word is written in two ways — ‘pandit’ and ‘pundit’. Though not a hard and fast rule, when referring to the people of India, the spelling ‘pandit’ is used in most cases, and when referring to a specialist or expert in any field from countries other than India, the spelling ‘pundit’ is used. In addition, the word ‘pandit’, with an ‘a’, is found in the names of some Indians who come from a certain caste.}
