paratrooper:
(also ‘paratroops‘, ‘para‘; plural: ‘paratroopers‘; pronunciation: ‘para…trooper’)
[‘para’ in this context = a ‘parachute’, an umbrella-like device that can be folded and opened, used by people jumping from an aircraft to get to the ground; and a ‘troop’ = a group of soldiers on a mission, often used in its plural form — ‘troops’; a ‘trooper‘ = a soldier who is mounted on a horse (cavelry), and a police officer on a horse, motorcycle or any vehicle — a mounted police]
a soldier who is trained to jump from an aircraft with the help of a parachute to land in places where it is difficult or dangerous to go/approach on land, especially in an enemy area, to fight the enemies or to support, give supplies or save their own soldiers who are already there fighting,
e.g.
Most of the time paratroopers are dropped in the enemy zone at night or early morning so that the enemy soldiers with anti-aircraft guns may not see them and shoot them while they are landing.
A paratrooper must know the basics of handling a parachute as well as a rifle on which his/her entire life depends.
