pathologist:
(plural: ‘pathologists‘; pronunciation: the letter ‘g’ is said with a ‘j’ as in “judge” — for the right pronunciation of this word, please click here)
a medical doctor/scientist who studies and is an expert in pathology;
a medical doctor who examines the body of a dead person to find out or confirm what has caused the death of that person (the cutting up of a person’s dead body to find what happened inside is called ‘autopsy’);
a medical doctor who is an expert who diagnoses what disease a patient has, i.e. finds out what disease a patient has, also called ‘diagnostician’,
e.g.
Pathologists not only do autopsies but also examine the biopsies that are sent to their laboratories.
Though a physician or surgeon can diagnose (find out) what disease a patient is suffering from, it is the pathologist who confirms the actual disease by examining the samples of a patient’s urine, motion, blood and/or very small pieces of the damaged part of body, called ‘biopsy’.
