pilchard

a kind of fish – fin, bony and scaly fish – belongs to the ‘herring’ fish family – small with stream-lined body
The herrings, sardines, anchovy, pilchard and some other small fish are all canned or tinned fish. They are found in large schools – large numbers in groups. The most common name is ‘sardines’.
According to some people, a fish shorter than 4 inches is called a sardine, and a fish longer than 4 inches is called a pilchard!
