plate layer:
(also in American usage ‘track layer‘ or ‘trackman‘; plural: ‘plate layers‘)
a workman who lays railway lines/rails on the ground and fixes them to the sleepers in order to keep them stable when a train moves on them,
e.g.
In the modern day railway line system, plate layers work with sophisticated electronic equipment while doing their job unlike the old-day plate layers who had to work with crude tools and to live and work at the sites in small sheds called ‘plate layer’s huts’.
Though most of the railway plate laying is done by huge cranes on fast-moving vehicles, the human plate layers are still in their jobs, especially in the developing countries.
