prince consort:
(plural: ‘princes consort’ or ‘prince consorts‘)
a prince who is the husband of a queen who rules a kingdom, i.e. the prince does not rule the country himself and is not called a king but just stays as the husband of the queen who actually rules the country, e.g. The husband of the present British Queen, Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip is called the Prince Consort. When we say Prince Henrik is the Prince Consort of Denmark, we mean that he is not the actual ruler of Denmark but the husband of the queen of Denmark, HRH Margrethe II, the Queen!
{Language Usage: If ‘prince consort’ is used with small ‘p’ and small ‘c’, it refers to any prince who is the husband of a ruling queen, but “Prince Consort”, always with a capital ‘P’ and ‘C’, is the title given to the husband of a ruling ‘queen’ in some special situations in some European countries.}
