pro & P.R.O.:
(plural: ‘pros‘; and ‘PROs‘)
A.
pro =
a professional, i.e. a person skilled or experienced in some trade, profession or sports and works or plays the sports for money;
(mostly in British usage) a prostitute, i.e. a woman (or a man) who has sex for money;
{Note: ‘Pro’ is also used to mean a person or vote that is in one’s favour, e.g. ‘pro-democracy movement’ = a movement that is in favour of a government ruled by the elected representatives of the people; in this context, the opposite word in meaning is ‘anti’, e.g. ‘anti abortion protesters’ = people who are against the legalisation of abortion.}
e.g.
Mohammed Ali is one of the greatest pro boxers. (i.e. he fought in boxing competitions for money, not just for the sake of enjoyment; in this context, the opposite word in meaning is ‘amateur’, i.e., a person who takes up some activity for pleasure or recreation)
They need a pro to cap the leaking oil wells; not some novice who knows nothing. (i.e. some qualified and experienced engineer who is skilled in fixing leaking oil wells, but not some half-knowledged and inexperienced workman)
