{in short: ‘prof’; plural: ‘professors‘; “Prof.” is used as a title given to a person with higher degree of education and is used before a person’s name to indicate a higher position in certain field or faculty}
a university teacher; a don; a fellow;
a person with great skill who teaches others the techniques or knowledge he/she knows or has;
(very less commonly) a person who professes, i.e. a person who declares or affirms his/her opinion or ideas openly;
(very less commonly) a person who acts or pretends,
e.g.
Prof. Roger is a professor of English at Oxford University, England.
There are ranks in professorship: ‘assistant professor’, a rank lower than an associate professor; ‘associate professor’, a rank lower than a full professor; and ‘full professor’, the highest rank of teaching.
Most of the professors who professed against the atrocities of the present government were put in jails and treated very badly. (i.e. those people who talked openly against the bad things the present government was doing were put in prison; in this context, there is no mentioning of higher education, though there might be some ‘professors’ who were educated)
{Note: A ‘visiting professor’ is a university teacher at a university goes to another university for some period of time teaches the students there and then goes back to his/her previous university, and an efficient university teacher who goes to different universities to teach a new theory or some new reach findings.}
