(plural: ‘proponents‘; the opposite word in meaning: ‘opponent‘)
a person who puts forward an idea — a proposition or proposal;
a person who supports and argues (propounds) in favour of something, such as a cause, movement, news idea, etc.;
a supporter; an exponent;
(in Law) a person who wants to establish the validity of a will (‘will’, in this context = an official document in which a person mentions the way in which something is to be done, especially how his/her property be shared by his family and relatives after his/her demise),
e.g.
The former US vice president, Al Gore, has been a strong proponent of global warming.
The proponents of non-violence must accept the fact that to keep peace, we must adopt strategies that involve violence at one time or the other.
