putter:
(plural: ‘putters‘; pronunciation: the letter ‘u’ rhymes with the letter ‘u’ in “but”)
{‘to putt‘ = in the game of golf, to hit a ball into or near to a hole}
(in the game of golf) a player who hits the ball into or near to a hole,
e.g.
Tiger Woods is known to be a great putter in the golf circles.
{Note: ‘Putter’ is also used to refer to a short stick/bat/club used in the game of golf to hit a ball into the hole, and ‘putter’ is also used to refer to players/athletes who participate in games other than golf, the pronunciation, however, slightly changed with the letter ‘u’ rhyming with the letter ‘u’ in “put”, e.g. ‘shot putter’ = an athlete who participates in a competition, also called ‘shot put’, in which a heavy iron ball is thrown as far as possible with one hand. In addition, ‘putter’ is, very less commonly, used to refer to any person who puts something in a particular position or who asks questions.}
{Note 2: ‘Putter’ is often used as a variant of ‘potter’, mostly in the US and Canada, to refer to a person who makes ‘pots’.}
