My political lecturer is an excellent source of knowledge; you can get any information almost on any topic from him.
The police, private detectives and intelligence officers almost always base their conclusions on the information they get from their human sources, and they protect their sources with their dear lives because without their sources, no intelligence agency can make any progress.
When we read or hear the words ‘sources say’ in the news, it means that the news reporters who gather the information do not like to reveal the person or persons they get the information from, and there is the law protecting the right to keep one’s source or sources in secrecy because once the persons are exposed, they may not be able to give any more information and also that their lives are at risk.
