bugger — beggar
[The vowel ‘u’ in “bugger” rhymes with the vowel ‘u’ in “butter”, and the vowel ‘e’ in “beggar” rhymes with ‘e’ in “bed”.]
“Bugger” is:
(a) ‘a foolish or annoying person’ –
e.g.
Shut up. You silly bugger!
[not to be used in formal situations]
(b) ‘a male person involved in unnatural sexual activities’
(c) ‘a person or animal that needs or deserves sympathy’ –
e.g.
Poor bugger! He lost both his legs in an accident.
(d) ‘something causing trouble or inconvenience’ –
e.g.
This job is a real bugger!
(e) a person who fixes/installs ‘bugs’ [‘bug’, in this context, is a small electronic device, usually hidden in places/things near people to listen their private/personal conversations secretly, which is an illegal or criminal act]
{Note: The ‘woolly bugger’ in the first video we see on the right of this text is an artificial fly used as a bait in fishing for sport. It, however, has nothing to do with the above mentioned definitions/meanings. The video is inserted here for the clear pronunciation of the word ‘bugger’.}
“Beggar” is ‘a poor person, or a person with physical or mental defect who lives by taking money or food and/or some other help from others (by begging)’,
e.g.
My friend gives away his old clothes to beggars.
