the displaced:
(usually used with the article ‘the’, plural in sense, and followed by a plural verb)
a person who is forced to leave his/her place of birth or place of work for political or religious reasons, or because of natural disasters, such as floods, earthquakes, climate change, tornadoes, major fire accidents, in times of war, etc, or when the government takes away their land and house in order to develop that area or to build some public utility or a major project such a highway, airport or some other building for the good of the public, with the promise of relocating them at a better location,
Joan was one of the displaced from the areas devastated by the last month’s floods.
After the floods, the displaced were given shelter in temporary make-shift tents; i.e. those people whose houses and belongings were washed away in the floods were given shelter in some tents, by either the other more lucky local people or the local government.
As a humanitarian gesture, each family in our community accepted a displaced person from those refugees and the displaced who had fled their hometowns because of the conflict between the armed rebels and the para-military forces.
Whenever there is a political conflict or natural disaster in a region or country, the Red Cross and other charity organisations work efficiently and methodically at camp sites where the displaced are kept until they are safe to return to their own homes.
