Despite its name, the elkhound is not related to the ‘hound family of dogs’; it is related to the ‘Spitz family’!
The elkhound is one of the most ancient breeds of dog; it has been associated with humans since 4000 BC!
Elkhounds are brave and faithful dogs. They are used for hunting large (game) animals, such as moose (elk), bear, wolf, badger, etc.
The interesting fact is that, while hunting game, the elkhound does not attack and kill the animal, but keeps the animal at bay until the hunter (the master) arrives at the scene and shoots the animal!

elkhound sweater
Elkhounds are sturdy and energetic animals, and they can withstand the cold harsh weather conditions of the Europe winter.
The double thick, double layered hair (coat) of this Norwegian elkhound is so warm that, in some villages in Norway, it is used for making (knitting) sweaters!
