frontrunner:
(plural: ‘frontrunners‘; pronunciation: ‘front…runner’)
a person who is in a leading position in a race, competition or election;
a person who does his best when in the leading position in a race, competition or election;
a favourite candidate in a competition, race or election,
Aunt Jane was over-joyed when Pete, her favourite nephew, became the frontrunner and she mustered all her efforts to make him the winner.
According to the Urban Dictionary, a frontrunner is also used to refer to a sports fan, also known as ‘fair-weather fan’, who supports a team which is winning, to a fat girl who at the front of a gaggle of girls going for a party, and to a boxer who starts very well in the first few rounds and then runs out of stamina.
We quite often witness the frontrunners in a political election doing better at an early stage but gradually losing the grip as the actual election date approaches which prompts some political analysts to come to the conclusion that the casual clangers the frontrunners drop in their debates or interviews on TV that are projected in a dark light, mostly quoting the phrases out of context, by their opponents make a lot of difference.
Though the word ‘frontrunner’ is not used for a runner who is running ahead of others in a running race event, there are some clubs and running activities that use this word for their name, e.g. Frontrunner running club, Frontrunner running shoes, etc.
