(plural: matrons‘; for the right pronunciation, please click here)
a woman who is in charge of an institution, such as a hospital, prison, school, etc.;
a woman, usually a senior female nurse but occasionally male nurse, too, who is in charge of and supervises the nursing and nurses of a hospital; a nursing officer;
a married middle-aged woman of dignity and good social position,
Some of the matrons in our middle-class community have decided to arrange a fundraiser show for the orphans in our community.
Most of the matrons in hospitals and prisons are usually heavy-built and stern-looking women, giving birth to the expression ‘matronly’ which is used to refer to any middle-aged fat woman.
It is understood that children in the care of efficient matrons develop better manners than those without them.
The smooth running of hospitals or prisons depends mostly on the way the matrons mind their duties and how matronly they are in implementing the rules and regulations of the institutions they work for.
