middlebrow:
(plural: ‘middlebrows‘; for the right pronunciation of this word, please click here)
a person who has normal/average levels of culture, education, tastes, attitude, etc. — not very high; not very low,
Mr John is a middlebrow with his average tastes and aspirations.
Some people who are middlebrows by nature want others to take them for more than what they are, and while trying to be more sophisticated than they are, they prove themselves to be lowbrows.
These days there is new category of people coming up which is called upper middlebrow, those who are above middlebrows but below highbrows.
In the present multicultural societies, more and more lowbrows are becoming middlebrows, and the highbrows are finding it more and more difficult either to accept them so that nobody calls them snobbish or to ignore them and live like the highbrows they actually are!
