pivot:
(plural: ‘pivots‘; pronunciation: the letters ‘pi’ rhyme with the letters ‘pi’ in “pin”, and the letter ‘o’ rhymes with the letter ‘a’ in “about”)
Apart from several other more common meanings/definitions …
a person in an organisation, office, group, society, etc., on whom the entire progress depends;
a person who is the centre figure on whom everything or very important decisions depend and whom all the others depend on and follow,
e.g.
Ms Jones is the pivot in our organisation; everything depends on her.
Political pundits always point out the fact that having a pivot in a political party on whom the entire party’s progress or popularity depends is, in the long run, harmful for the existence of the party.
{Note: ‘Pivot’ is more commonly used in mechanics to refer to a rod or shaft on which other related parts in a machine rotate/move around or swing.}
