a person who sells stationery;
(old usage) a bookseller; a book publisher;
(in law) a person who sells things, forms and paper used by a lawyer;
(in law & mostly in British usage & less commonly used) a person who makes copies of legal documents by hand,
For school children of the yesteryears, it used to be a pilgrimage visiting a stationery shop on their own and buying pencils, paper and stickers (labels) from the good old stationer who at times would give away a fancy eraser or a sheet of coloured paper free to the most regular customers.
It’s interesting to learn that before the professional name ‘bookbinder’ was established, it had been the job of the stationers to bind the loose sheets of paper into a sturdy book.
As the electronic and computer messaging has completely taken over the postal mailing service, the stationers are the most affected as few and few people are using any writing material and commercial designers and school students are using computers, not the traditional drawing boards, paper and pencils, to draw anything from complicated designs to simple classroom geometry drawings!
