stayer:
(plural: ‘stayers‘; for the right pronunciation of this word, please click here)
a person who supports something, often with difficulty;
a person who has enough physical and mental strength to finish a race, competition, etc.;
a person who lives in a particular place for a very long time, facing troubles and difficulties, especially illegally,
Uncle John is a typical stayer in our small town; he’s never left his home or the town except for a short visit to the nearby cities though most of his family and friends have moved to other places for business or employment.
Almost every country, irrespective of whether it’s a developed or a developing country, has been faced with the sensitive political issue of “over stayers”, those immigrant workers who stay back in it even after their visas or work permits expire.
Ms Nancy and her followers are undoubtedly the stayers in our crippling political party who have been in this party all their political life and have never shown any intention of leaving it though its doom is quite obvious, having lost most of the seats to the new parties in the past three general elections.
Note 2: ‘Stayer’, always with a capital ‘S’, is found in the names of people, e.g. Tom Stayer, Nancy Stayer, Lindsay Stayer, etc.
